Design for Manufacturability review is where a board that works perfectly on the bench either becomes a smooth production run or a source of expensive delays. After enough production ramps, the failure patterns become predictable — and preventable, if you check for them before release.

Component placement and orientation consistency is the first check. Polarized components (diodes, electrolytic capacitors, ICs) should have consistent orientation across the board wherever the layout allows it — this dramatically reduces placement errors during manual inspection and rework, and speeds up automated optical inspection (AOI) programming.

Second is minimum spacing for your assembly process. Fine-pitch components need clearance not just from each other but from taller neighboring components that could interfere with pick-and-place nozzles or reflow oven fixtures. We check this against the specific capability file of the assembly house that will build the board, not generic industry defaults.

Third is test point accessibility. Every net that needs in-circuit testing or bench debugging should have an accessible test point — added during layout, not discovered as a gap during test-fixture design. Retrofitting test points after layout is finalized often means routing changes.

Fourth is panelization efficiency. How a board panelizes for assembly directly affects your per-unit assembly cost — awkward board outlines or improperly placed mouse-bites/v-scores waste panel area and slow depaneling. We design board outlines with panelization in mind from early layout, not as an afterthought before Gerber release.

Fifth, and most commonly missed: silkscreen legibility after solder mask and reflow. Reference designators that overlap pads, get covered by taller components, or shrink below a readable size at production scale make troubleshooting and rework far slower for line technicians. We review silkscreen placement as a dedicated step, not a byproduct of routing.

Running this checklist before Gerber release costs an afternoon. Skipping it costs a production stoppage discovered on the assembly line.
